Whats wrong with my transmission?

I have a 2003 Dodge Neon sxt automatic transmission with 95,000 miles on it. Recently while driving it, it wants to bog down and not go anywhere and when i turn i hear a kinda metal popping sound. Well i had my friends dad drive it and it drove fine when he put it 3 and 1 on the gear selecter. and it would shift through all of the gears when he put it in 1 and 3. but as soon as he put it in drive it would start bogging down again and not accelerate anywhere. So my question is what the heck is wrong lol.
